These very primitive members of the Phylum Cephalopoda were collected in
the Atlas mountains of Morocco. Approximately 400,000,000
years old, Orthoceras are ancestral cousins of the modern
squid and octopus. The word orthoceras means "Straight
Horn" and refers to its shape. All orthoceras have chambers
, separated by walls called septas. They also have a
tube that runs down the center of the fossil called
a siphuncle. It is believed that this tube was used
to carry gas into the chambers to control buoyancy of
the shell.

Ammonite Fossils

The word Ammonites means "AMMON'S STONE"
and refers to the Egyptian God Ammon,
that often appeared with rams' horns.
Ammonites are actually a subclass
of the Phylum Cephalopoda, and like
the modern Cephalopods, including
the Chambered Nautilus and the Squid.
Ammonites had well developed eyes
and tentacles for grasping food. The
lines on the shell are called "Suture
patterns" and became increasingly
complex as the animal evolved. Ammonites
apparently evolved from Ordovician
Nautiloids but did not become established
until the Mid-Devonian times, or about
300,000,000 years ago. Fossil Ammonites
are found worldwide. They are now
extinct.
